The Sixth annual 2012 –13 Green Thumb Scholarships
2012 Green Thumb Garden Club Scholarship Awards. The Green Thumb Garden Club met recently and decided to award their annual scholarships to five Fond du Lac county students who are pursuing college degrees in horticulture or a related field. These students are:
Benjamin Julka who attends Fox Valley Technical College, studying Agronomy, Farm Operations Course. He has been involved 4-H , FFA, Fond du Lac County Farm Bureau, and many county organizations.
Philip Ohlinger who attends St. Norbert College, studying Environmental Science, loves the outdoors, and wants to care for the earth and its resources. He is very strong in academics, worked in the college library, is a member of the Environmental Club, and is an RA (resident assistant), and College Church Ministry. Philip has traveled to Panama on a research trip. Received the Green Thumb Scholarship in 2010.
Carly Ottery who attended Campbellsport High School and will attend UW-Madison majoring in Environmental Studies. Outstanding academically and ranks in the top five in her class. Speaks Spanish and is involved in Art Club, the soccer team, and basketball. Carly volunteers for Christian Youth Ministries, Relay for Life, and Youth Art Camp.
Caleb Riedeman who attends UW-River Falls, pursuing a degree in Crop and Soil Science. He is considering a graduate program at UW-Madison. He has a Master’s in Agronomy and has a commitment to agriculture. Caleb works with Big Brothers/Big Sisters in River Falls. He was on the Dean’s List in his sophomore year. Caleb also received the Green Thumb Scholarship in 2010.
Lisa Swast who attended Fond du Lac High School and plans to attend UW-Fond du Lac to begin her studies with a major in Horticulture and a minor in Business. Lisa plans to open a greenhouse someday. She has worked on a CSA farm, a greenhouse, a floral studio, and loves to garden. She has done community service in Fond du Lac and has excellent academics.
The Green Thumb Garden Club has awarded scholarships since 2006.
All five 2012 recipients are strong academically, support community service, and have excellent goals to better our world by studying and caring for plants, soil, and the environment.
Each year the Green Thumb Garden Club holds a plant sale in May and the proceeds help sponsor these scholarships. Committee members are: Maureen Mezera, Gerda Strupp, Diane Ladwig, Judy Mittelstadt, Charlotte Nelson, Nancy Riley, and Vicki Melius, with additional assistance from Sharon Stoffel.
