Club Awards

  2016 Presidential Citation

The Green Thumb Garden Club 2016 Presidential Citation is proudly presented to Karen Witucke.

Karen has been a member of the GTGC for only 5 years but she has been a great addition to our club and a great friend to everyone she meets. Karen started donating plants to our Annual Plant Sale before she was even a member. Long time member Elaine Miller asked Karen to join. Karen works very hard on plant sale, finding plants from friends to donate along with potting sale and helping to pot up the plants, helping to clean up the area used for the plant sale and assisting Sandi with her garden when health issues kept her down.

Karen also helps plan the yearbook programs and gives some of the programs as well. She has served on the refreshment committee many times. Karen started the Garden Therapy program at Lakeview Place and has inspired other members to help out. She attended the WGCF State Convection and learned more about the makeup of the Wisconsin Garden Club Federation. Karen has attended many Fox River Valley District Meetings and enjoys all the speakers that present at those meeting. She has enjoyed making new friends. Karen also plants and maintains the beautiful gardens on the grounds of Sacred Heart Church in Fond du Lac.

The Green Thumb Garden Club is lucky to have Karen Witucke as a contributing member of our club and very proud to award her the Presidential Citation.

Green Thumb Garden Club
2015 Presidential Citation
The Green Thumb Garden Club 2015 Presidential Citation is proudly
presented to Sandra Smet.
Sandra has been an active member of the Green Thumb Garden Club since
1991. She is a tireless recruiter for new membership, always talking about the
club and our activities with everyone she meets and inviting them to come try
us out.
Sandra is very active in the GTGC, both serving as past President and Vice
President, but also on many committees such as our flower shows, garden
therapy, butterfly garden, historical, financial, and ways and means. She has a
special place in her heart for children in the garden and helps to encourage a
child's love of gardening by participating in High Interest Day at Lakeshore
Elementary School. Here the children get to plant cannas grown from Sandra's
own garden as well learn about the benefits of gardening and plant care. She
also participates in Prairie Fest at the Godfried Arboretum each July where the
children get to plant using shoes as their container.
Sandra promotes National Garden week and our club activities throughout
Fond du lac and can always be counted on to contribute a gift basket to the
District Convention. She, along with her husband Jim, have opened their home
to our annual plant sale, devoting many long hours to setting up, maintaining,
and caring for the many donated plants that we sell each spring. Without her
hard work on behalf of our Plant Sale, the Green Thumb Garden Club would
not be able to donate money to scholarships for students pursuing a career in
Horticulture.
Sandra also donates many hours to helping put together our yearbook each
spring; a big job appreciated by all of our members. For the past 2 years
Sandra has been Vice President, filling in for me when I am unable to attend a
meeting and going to state and district meetings in my place. Her willingness
to help out and step in wherever needed is one of her best qualities. The Green
Thumb Garden Club is lucky to call Sandra Smet a member and very proud to
award her the Presidential Citation.
Sincerely,
Vicky Melius

The 2014 Presidential Citation is proudly given to:

 Elaine Miller

Elaine has been an active member of the Green Thumb Garden Club since 2001. Elaine has always loved growing things and nature. When she retired from her nursing    career she joined Green Thumb Garden Club, but that didn’t keep Elaine from caring for her many dear friends in time of need.

Elaine has served as our Club Secretary for at least eight years. She sends the minutes to our members that can’t make our meetings. Each member receives a birthday card from Green Thumb (Elaine) each year.

Elaine is the chair for the spring cleanup at Manor Care (nursing Home) gardens, and maintains them throughout the summer. This started over 10 years ago. Elaine also helps with Garden Therapy at the other four Nursing Homes we work with. Elaine always finds something in her garden to be creative with for our Flower Shows. She also serves on the Youth Outreach projects we do. And she serves on the Telephone Committee. If you need a ride to a meeting or go on a Garden Tour, Elaine will be there to pick you up and bring you home again. Every club would be lucky if they had a caring member like Elaine.

                                      President, Vicky Melius
